bad design of PSU (power supply unit), microsoft was trying to make the console smaller and they messed it up a bit by makeing the PSU to small and badly vented which makes it over heat, that is the most common cause off the red ring of death. i think you can buy extra fans that sit at the back to help cool it but i dont know if it helps that much probibily worth trying to avoid RROD
